Chapter Twelve
Unlucky Cowboy
At Daddyâs behest, Tabby left her house and stumbled toward the barn. She looked up at the sky as she walked, expecting to see a drone bearing down on her from the heavens. But the sky was baby-blue and clear. There werenât even any clouds in sight. It was as if the world had been emptied while she was asleep, and now she was stuck with Daddy and his fiendish accomplice. She could only hope to appease them. Anything for the sake of her daughter.
Tabby felt sweat crawl down the small of her back. She was nervous. She had no clue what was in store for her, but it would certainly be depraved. Having completed only one task for Daddy was trying enough as it was.
Tabby opened the door to her barn and stepped in. The air inside was fetid and musty. The floor was caked in bird shit and feathers. She had been meaning to clean the place up, but the barn really served no purpose to her or Randy. It had come with the property. Aside from giving her goats a place to wander, it really offered them nothing. There were some stockades where horses had once been kept and a few rusty pieces of farm equipment⦠but that was it.
Tabby realized that she wasnât alone in the barn.
She gasped with fright when she saw that Daddyâs heavy was with her. Muscled, dressed in a tank top and a grey pair of sweatpants, and wearing a featureless mask, he looked like the villain from a cheap 80âs slasher movie. The type of flick Randy would watch for fun before the world treated him to a dose of real horror.
âDo you see my associate?â Daddy asked into Tabbyâs ear.
âY-yes.â She quivered.
âHis name is Markos.â
Shit. Why is he giving me his name? Maybe itâs an alias. Or⦠maybe they donât expect you to talk to the police about this. Or maybe⦠oh god⦠maybe theyâre going to kill you.
She couldnât waste time thinking about that possibility. It was becoming more and more real with each passing second, but she figured she could repress it until it was a necessary woe.
âSay âhiâ to him.â
âHi, Markos.â
The masked man waved a calloused hand. His shirt was smeared with dried blood. Estherâs. Tabby didnât even have to ask. This was the man that had torn her head away from her shoulders⦠and set it on Rileyâs lap.
Tabby shuddered with revulsion and anger.
âWhatâs the first task?â Tabby asked.
âIâm glad youâre so high-spirited. Most folks arenât so eager to play.â
âPlease. Letâs just get this over with.â
âYouâll follow Markos.â
Markos took out a cell-phone. He tapped the screen slowly, and then held it in front of him. The light beaming out from its top indicated that he was filming.
âMarkos will also be your cameraman. Just act like he isnât there when you get started.â
Tabby saw that Markos had an erection. The swollen lump in his pants was becoming an arrow-head. His free hand reached down and pressed against his sturdy genitalia.
